HISTORY The Old Smithy has an interesting historic background involving the Barty family who occupied the property from 1746-1947. During the battle of Culloden, an officer's horse threw a shoe and Mr Barty re-shod it. The officer was impressed and asked if there was anything he could do in return. Barty said he would like to be a blacksmith at Meikleour. This was duly granted and in 1746 four stakes were driven into the ground to mark the site where The Old Smithy stands today. There is also a Ordnance Survey point on the side of the cottage.
